Deccan Chargers put behind their last year's performance where they finished last and got a winning start of the 2009 Indian Premier League - IPL season by beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets on Sunday, 19th April, 2009 at Cape Town.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and electedto bat but new captain Brandon Mccullum and Chris Gayle gone early followed by former captain Gaunguly and bundled out on 101 in 19.4 overs. RP Singh took 4 wickets.

In reply Deccan Chargers reached the target thanks to Heschell Gibbs and Rohit Sharma contributed contributed unbeaten 43 off 26 balls and 36 off 32 balls respectively.
